Distance Learning - What is it?
A distance learning course is a college
course that is taught with the aid of technology. The instructor and student
may not be in the same physical space or classroom during the class sessions.
Videotaped course sessions, telecourses, satellite courses, and courses offered
on the Internet are all forms of distance learning. This guide focuses on Internet-based
courses.
Internet courses are similar to classroom
courses and at the same time they are different, in that information and communication
with others occurs virtually.
The Similarities:
- There is usually one Instructor.
- The Instructor has regular office
hours -- online.
- A course syllabus is provided.
- Written responses or reports,
reading and research assignments are required.
- Assignments have due dates and
may have a grade attached to it.
- Quizzes and tests are common.
- Group discussions and team projects.
- The Instructor monitors participation
through class attendance and participation.
- The Instructor teaching the course
grants the course grade.
- The course cost and student fees
are usually the same.
The Differences:
- The course syllabus is on the
course web site.
- The course web site is the main
connection between the student and Instructor.
- Distance learning courses require
the student to "communicate" more often.
- The instructor monitors participation
by checking the course web site, printing out reports detailing student log-ins
and observing use of the course site.
