Basic Distance Learning Tools

Distance learning students need a computer, computer software and a connection to the Internet to participate in a web-based course.

The Computer

The word "computer" refers to every part of your computer, including the monitor, keyboard, speakers and mouse. With a desktop computer it can also refer to the tower or horizontal box. This large rectangular box contains your hard drive, floppy drive and modem. It may also include a CD Drive or a DVD Drive. Speakers, the mouse, the keyboard, the monitor, and the printer are all attached to the tower or horizontal box. Generally with a laptop computer all of these parts, except the printer, are located in one unit.

Accessing a Computer

Access to a computer may be available through a local library, college computer lab or community center. A loaned computer may be available through a college or non-profit entity such as a childcare resource & referral agency or the Caregiver Connection at Broome Community College.

Name brand computers from companies historically have provided better access to replacement parts & warranties for their computers. If there is an option of picking the type of computer to be used, refer to the following minimum or preferred features to guide the purchase.
